SUPERMARKET TOUR

Frosty-Os piled high
Next to corn syrup sodas
Mayonnaisey spreads
Boxes of instant cakes –
I ply the aisles
Vacantly eyeing all
The dead foods
With shiny labels
Stocked on shelves
Neatly, neatly.
Attention shoppers!
Before you/you see
Food products trucked
(with fumes) from
Factory farms and
Industrial strength
Processing plants.
Check the ingredients
Unpronounceable
Gunk-stuff-clogging
Chemosthemy
Uh-huh, uh-huh.
And the produce –
Genetically selected
To stay unbruised
For a long shelf life
Or whatnot…for profits
Grown in long rows
(and now how neatly stacked)
Row after row – degraded
By the very process that
Produced such mock-ups.
And abused animal meats
Again, packaged
Neatly, neatly
I see –
Cadaver slices
From once-upon-a-time
Units of life denied
Who suffered cruelty
To slake the taste buds of
Civilization’s minions,
And I proceed to check-out
To join the other
Restive-yet-servile
Symptom-bearers
Of artificial food
Dysfunction.
